At age 16 I was diagnosed with a major scoliosis of my spine by the top orthopedic Doctors in Toronto, Canada. I was a very tall teenager, 5’ 8 “ and extremely active in different sports. My future career goals involved sports medicine and injuries associated with activity. The Doctors recommended surgery that would implant a Harrington Rod into my spine and fuse my vertebrae, followed by 6 months in a body cast. This was in 1974. I needed to really think about this. 2 years later when I was waterskiing at our cottage in the summer, I developed a sharp pain in my right shoulder blade region. It hurt every time I took a breath and started to cause some numbness in my right arm. One of my neighbor's, Dr. Howie Wasser, D.C. was interning at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, suggested that I see his senior resident and be evaluated for this pain. After a thorough evaluation, review of my x rays, and examining my condition, my mentor Dr. Garey Awenus, D.C. proceeded to adjust my spine, specifically my right rib, and my lower neck, and I had instant relief from what felt like a ‘hot knife in my back’. It was remarkable. This was the turning point for me, no drugs, no surgery, no metal rod and inflexibility, no cast for 6 months, and who knows what else in the future! I was in pre med classes heading to the University of Toronto for my Bachelor of Science, only now I was going to go to Chiropractic College after instead of Medical School. That decision was 45 years ago. I am living and breathing as well as I do thanks to chiropractic care, yoga , water exercise, healthy diet, meditation, massage therapy, and every other natural approach to health and wellness that I have studied and incorporated into my life and my practice. Being blessed and grateful to be celebrating practicing Holistic Chiropractic care and natural healing in the Upper Florida Keys for the past 25 years has allowed me to share so many healing moments with our community, with our visitors, and with our friends and families who share our lives. We are all getting older and aging together. Our wisdom and experiences have shaped us and guided us. We support each other with open hearts and healing wisdom and feel joy and challenges each day. We have learnt that we cannot control everything, this past year and a half has taught us that. But supporting each other is key. Our future is bright, and we are optimistic about the possibilities and the challenges. We have all had to dig deep to find our strength and more than ever value our health. I look forward to sharing many health and wellness tips and stories, and hearing about your interests and concerns.
